San Antonio Spurs head to Colorado to face the Denver Nuggets

Some may be waiting for the Spurs to let up, but it simply hasn’t happened. Can they win again in Wednesday’s showdown against the Nuggets?
Gregg Popovich’s San Antonio squad is 8-2 SU in its previous 10 games and has won three in a row coming into this matchup.
The San Antonio Spurs have won two straight by double digits, including Monday’s 111-96 victory at home over the Golden State Warriors.
Tim Duncan went out early due to an ankle injury, but Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Tiago Splitter stepped up to lead their team to a win.
Parker put up 17 points and 15 assists while Ginobili netted a game-high 28 points on 9-of-18 shooting. Splitter came up big with extended playing time, logging 10 points, 14 rebounds and three steals in over 26 minutes off the bench.
Another win isn’t a guarantee for the Spurs however versus a cohesive Denver Nuggets team.
The Nuggets have won eight of their past 11 contests and head into Wednesday fresh off a 123-90 beatdown of the Toronto Raptors at home.
In Monday’s huge win, seven different players reached double figures for Denver, though Ty Lawson (23 points, eight assists, four boards) was especially effective. J.R. Smith meanwhile had 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight dimes off the bench.
Two hot Western Conference teams face off
Ahead of this encounter the Spurs are 9-4 ATS in their 13 most recent road games but are just 2-6 ATS in their last eight affairs playing on one days rest.
The Nuggets have torched the NBA betting spreads left and right lately, cashing ATS in six consecutive home games. They are 21-8 ATS in their last 29 games overall.
Unfortunately for the Spurs Tim Duncan is expected to be out until at least early April while DeJuan Blair is dealing with a wrist injury but is considered probable for Wednesday’s game.
Denver’s Arron Afflalo (hamstring) will miss at least a week and Raymond Felton has been hobbled by an ankle sprain. Be sure to check on his status over at SBR’s updated injury report.
Injuries aside, while the Spurs may own the NBA’s best record, it’s the Nuggets who I think will capture the win on Wednesday evening.
I really like how Denver has been playing since a roster shakeup that saw Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups leave town.
The ball has been moving around nicely rather than being stuck in the hands of Melo for most of the game and put simply the Nuggets are just playing much better team ball since the trade.
Losing Duncan will hurt San Antonio, even if age is starting to catch up with the big man. The Spurs are a lot stronger defensively when he’s on the floor and I think George Karl’s troops will take advantage this coming Wednesday.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Will Feature in ‘Hard Knocks’

If there’s actually an NFL season, that is, which I don’t think there will be considering the billions of dollars and long-term player health over which owners and players are currently arguing. But I can still dream, can’t I? ESPN has given me hope for the best sports reality show about an NFL team on HBO.
For those who don’t know, Hard Knocks is the exquisitely shot HBO reality show that focuses on a single NFL team’s training camp and preseason. It will be tough to top last year’s New York Jets, which featured noted obese man and foot fetish enthusiast head coach Rex Ryan, but the Bucs are a great choice. They have a young roster and coach, and LeGarrette Blount plays running back. He’s bound to punch somebody, right? If the NFL lockout continues to be a pesky annoyance, look for LeGarrette to star in his own reality show, Blount Force Trauma, loosely based on Rocky V and every Jean Claude van Damme movie ever made.

Irving May Return For Duke’s Tournament Opener

Freshman point guard Kyrie Irving might play Friday in Duke’s NCAA tournament opener, coach Mike Krzyzewski said on Tuesday.
“There is a chance that he would play, but the decision won’t be made for a few days,” Krzyzewski said during his on-campus news conference to preview Duke’s NCAA tournament opener.
Irving, who is recovering from an injury to his right big toe, practiced some with the team today. No. 1 seed Duke (30-4) meets No. 16 seed Hampton at about 3:15 p.m. Friday at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte.
Krzyzewski said Irving will not start and would only play a few minutes at a time if he gets on the court.

Bulls gain ground on cold-shooting Heat

CHICAGO — On the day the Miami Heat stood pat at the trade deadline, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade couldn’t do it alone. The superstars scored all but five of the Heat’s points in the second half as the Miami bench contributed two. That was not enough to overcome a balanced effort by the Chicago Bulls in a 93-89 victory.
Chris Bosh had a nightmare 1-for-18 shooting game, and Miami was held to 40.5% shooting overall in losing for the second time in the last 13 games and falling to 1-7 against the NBA’s elite teams.
The Bulls closed within two games of the second-place Heat in the Eastern Conference standings and clinched the tiebreaker in the season series, with one more game left against Miami.
TRADE DEADLINE: Big day in trades
HEAT WAVE: Inside the hype for the Heat
STAYING PUT: East contenders avoid trades
THUNDER GO BIG: Real West contender?
“You know that 90% of our offense comes from the Big 3,” said James, who scored 29 points to go with Wade’s 34. “There’s no way you can recoup C.B. He just didn’t have it going. … The great thing about it, we got another one (Friday, against the 15-41 Washington Wizards), and he has a chance to redeem himself.”
Bosh had no excuses for what he said was his worst shooting game: “I just have to stay in the gym, not let this affect me. … It makes it kind of frustrating for me, just knowing if I would have made two or three of them in a close game like that, I think it would have made a difference.”
Miami coach Erik Spoelstra instead pointed to defensive lapses down the stretch. The most costly was Wade leaving Chicago’s Luol Deng wide open in the corner for a tie-breaking three-pointer with 16 seconds left. “He’s an easy target. People will look at his shooting percentage. He will bounce back,” Spoelstra said of Bosh.
The Bulls overcame a 9-for-24 effort from Derrick Rose, who finished with 26 points. Deng scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half, and the bench contributed 22 points and 20 rebounds. Backup center Omer Asik, whom Chicago apparently refused to part with in trade discussions, pitched in with 11 rebounds in less than 21 minutes.http://koellmann.blog.co.uk/
“Our bench gave us a huge spark,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said.
Rose and Deng led the charge in the third with 12 and 10 points, respectively, as Chicago outscored Miami 27-14 for a 71-67 lead, and the Bulls continued to pour it on early in the fourth.
The crowd was really rocking when Ronnie Brewer nailed a jumper to make it 80-71 with 8:26 left, but the Heat weren’t finished.
They answered by reeling off 13 straight points to go up 84-80 with just under five minutes remaining.
Chicago’s Kyle Korver nailed a three-pointer from the right side at the shot-clock buzzer to make it a one-point game, and Rose’s drive along the right side put the Bulls back on top 85-84 with 2:48 remaining. Deng then nailed a jumper from up top, and when Rose buried one right in front of the Heat bench to make it 89-84 with 1:06 left, the crowd just about came unglued.
Wade answered with a fadeaway jumper and James tied it at 89 on a three-point play with 36.8 seconds remaining. Rose was then isolated at the top with James, and when he saw Wade help on a drive, he kicked it out to Deng in the left corner for the go-ahead 3.
“Derrick has been making great plays all year,” Deng said. “I just knew he was going to make the right play. D-Wade was so concerned with helping LeBron.”
Wade said, “(Rose) made a helluva pass and Deng hit a good shot. I think in that case you make somebody else beat you.”
James then threw up a wild 3 from the top of the key with Deng closing in, the ball hitting all glass. Korver got fouled and missed the first free throw before hitting the second to make it 93-89 with 9.4 seconds left.
“It just lets people know that we can compete with some of the best teams in the NBA,” Rose said.

Roses imported to meet Valentine’s demand

Florists will be working through the night preparing red roses to sell on Valentine’s Day.

As many as half the blooms are from overseas because demand exceeds New Zealand growers’ ability to supply.

Kiwis are willing to pay mark-ups of up to  Cheap NFL Jerseys 400% for Valentine’s roses.

An estimated half of the roses going on sale tomorrow come from India and were cut as long as a week ago.

However, most florists are still buying New Zealand grown roses from flower auctions.

One florist told ONE News she thinks the New Zealand-grown roses look better, have better foliage and last longer.

But there are not enough New Zealand grown roses to go around, especially for supermarkets and large chains like The Warehouse, creating the need for imports.

“Most of the roses that we get from India are here within two to two-and-a-half days ofcutting,” said Lance Straker, a flower importer.

He said those roses would last five to seven days in a vase from Monday.

By the time a customer buys a bunch on Monday, they will be a week old. They have been chilled to two degrees between plane and truck trips and dipped in a herbicide that slows their growth.

David Blewden of the New Zealand Flower Growers Association said home-grown blooms can last up to 10 days.http://koellmann.blog.co.uk/

“Any flower that doesn’t last the distance, then that potentially tarnishes the whole industry and has an effect on repeat sales for our growers. So our recommendation to consumers would be to ask retailers where their flowers are coming from and to wherever possible buy New Zealand fresh grown flowers,” Blewden said.

On Valentine’s Day, a dozen imported roses in most supermarkets will cost about $40, whilea premium Auckland florist selling home-grown roses quoted $160, four times as much.

John Edwards Not Engaged to Rielle Hunter

Despite rumors to the contrary, former presidential hopeful John Edwards is not engaged to Rielle Hunter, sources close to the couple tell ABC News.

“I do not believe it to be true,” Hunter’s attorney, Alan Duncan, told ABC News when asked about a report in The National Enquirer that Edwards had proposed over a December vacation, just weeks after the death of his estranged wife Elizabeth Edwards.

Another source close to the couple also disputed the alleged engagement, telling ABC News that the couple was not planning to wed.

According to the Enquirer, the same publication that first broke the news of Edwards’ extramarital affair with Hunter in 2007, Edwards told Hunter he wanted to “become one big, happy family.”

A spokeswoman for the Edwards family declined to comment on the report.

Hunter is the mother of Edwards’ 2-year-old daughter, Quinn. Edwards first denied the affair with Hunter before admitting the indiscretion in August 2008. Then, in January 2010 he admitted that he was, in fact, Quinn’s father.

Reports of an impending wedding come just days after news that will of Edwards’ estranged wife Elizabeth Edwards excluded the former North Carolina senator.

This is not the first time a wedding between Edwards and Hunter has been rumored.

Last year, following the announcement that Edwards is Quinn’s biological father, the Enquirer ran a similar story reporting the couple’s engagement that was also debunked.

Also last year, Andrew Young, a former aide to Edwards, told ABC News that Hunter talked about plans for a rooftop wedding in New York.

Elizabeth Edwards, who died Dec. 7 after a six-year battle with breast cancer, appointed her eldest daughter Catharine as the executor of her will, which makes no mention of John Edwards.

The will also stipulates that Cate Edwards, 28, will serve as guardian for her two younger siblings — Emma Claire, 12, and Jack, 10 — if anything happens to John Edwards.

“All of my furniture, furnishings, household goods, jewelry, china, silverware and personal effects and any automobiles owned by me at the time of my death I give and bequeath to my children who shall be living at the time of my death,” the will states.
